Lazuli wearing the Nathane Snow Mountain Coat personally dyed. I love this coat.

I’ve gotten a few compliments on my fashion sense. It’s a bunch of polygons and all, but I’m still flattered.

Schizophrenia

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I was watching some old Horizon thing last night about the link between creativity and psychological disorders. Schizophrenia was characterized as “involuntary creativity” in which a person associates everything in the universe with everything else in the universe. All things are connected and there’s no beginning nor end to a person’s thought process. This is the first time I heard Schizophrenia described in a way that made me jealous. I would love to have involuntary creativity.

Here’s the link if you care to watch it, Mad but Glad.

About American manga

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

So there is an issue with images not showing up for the RSS readers. Thanks all who commented and let me know. I’ll look into this, and hopefully I can get images working soon.

A week or so ago I made a post asking questions about American manga. I think now is a good time to share my opinion.

OEL manga is still… to quote of Ryoma Echizen “mada mada da ne”. In other words, there’s much work to be done. What I’ve seen is a lot of good sketch book ideas, but the artists and writers seem to have difficulty expressing them with confidence. I wont name names (okay, I will, me, haha).

I think the recipe for success here is “original and with confidence”.

This means that artists may have to kill their manga/anime habit for the sake of new ideas. As artists we hardly notice it, but we do borrow ideas that have made impressions on us. If most of your time is spent consuming one type of material, that is what you’re going to poop out.

Life experience is lacking across the board. You get access to new material every time you do something new in life, and I don’t think many people think about this. Besides, it’s fun to experience things with the mindset of a news reporter.

Those are some of my thoughts. I know I have a lot of work to do too.

Pictured: The reborn Lazuli (my Mabinogi character).
I like this look a lot better. Though, everyone mistakes him for a girl… I really have no clue why that is.
;D

If you are reading this through RSS feed, please let me know these images are showing for you.

Thanks!

What I was affraid of

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

ANN indicated in a recent article that Tokyopop will stop publishing an OEL title:

World manga creator Rivkah reports that Tokyopop will release the third and final volume of her Steady Beat series only on the web, and the publisher will not be printing it. She also indicated that other world manga titles are similarly affected. Rivkah is discussing with Tokyopop the possibility of returning the print rights — at least for the third volume of Steady Beat — back to her. Tokyopop’s former publisher and future Tokyopop Media executive Mike Kiley had previously said that the publisher will reduce the number of titles it will print per month after its restructuring and layoffs last month. Who else is getting the axe?

Also, this makes water in that Pilot program pond a bit more foggy. Ech.

Lazuli

I’m the type to burn through free MMOs like rubber. The latest has been Mabinogi, a pretty neat game created by devCat with a Celtic Mythology premise centered around rebirth. The game itself is actually about five years old, with a good following in Korea, China, and Japan. The North American version was only released earlier this year by Nexon. I started seeing print ads for Mabinogi in rags like Shojo Beat and decided to play (sucessful marketing is successful). I expect to be playing this until FFIV DS comes out :D

I made a boy character, with hopes of making him a healer and a cook. If anyone plays or if your friends do, maybe we can get dungeon goldz, hunt bears, or harvest corn or something. Yeah. Pro.
