Anon: Your art is not worth money
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008This was posted in a forum topic about video game piracy, but I think it applies to other things. I’m posting it here because I thought it was interesting; I don’t necessarily agree with it.
“…Game developers are entertainers, or “artists” if they are very good… Entertainment and art are not a commodities. They are not something that is consumed and hence destroyed, nor are they vital for life. They are not like food nor shelter.
So naturally, it’s somewhat risky to rely on entertainment as your sole means of making money. People today are not that keen to pay for such trivial matters, especially if they don’t know how entertaining you’re going to be. Plus, is it reasonable to expect people to want to pay? Just because you do something amusing, doesn’t mean you have a right to profit. Nobody asked you to make games.”
What are your thoughts?
